Engineering careers develop in many varied ways. Successful candidates may start in a technical function and develop as a professional before moving into a management position. Marketing, sales and roles involving a level of technical knowledge are also areas that potential engineers can move into.
Due to the diverse nature of the engineering industry, it is difficult to extrapolate exact examples of what a typical career path may look like. Due to the constantly changing nature of the technology available to engineers, there is a strong exogenous force acting on career paths of engineers. However, it is advisable to build a strong level of technical ability and understanding within one field of engineering. From this foundation career progression can be drive by the awareness and development of wider and softer skills. Dealing with people and working in teams is essential, developing negociation and management skills is also essential to advancing along a career path. As you progress up the line of comand and further within your field or employer, your understanding of the technical aspect of your work will become more removed and abstract, but at the same time a need for commercial and business awareness will be paramount as your move to dirctor level.
